EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, is the sole registrar for names in the .edu domain. The Department of Commerce awarded management of the domain to EDUCAUSE in October 2001. Requests for new names in the domain are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible institutions, and holders of .edu domain names must use this Web site to manage their domains and hosts. EDUCAUSE also is the exclusive provider of contact information for the .edu domain, available on the Whois server.

EDUCAUSE is working with EnCirca, a top level domain registrar with over 20 years of experience, to provide a system with increased performance availability and flexibility. New features being launched in June will include enhanced privacy settings for whois data, greater account management, and additional domain protection options. In order to prepare for this transition, EDUCAUSE will deploy two blackout periods.

From May 8 to June 1, EDUCAUSE cannot accept any new domain requests, domain name changes, or organization name changes. During this period, current domain holders will be able log in and manage all other aspects of their domain.

Starting on the evening of June 1, there will be a complete blackout during which time no domain management functions will be available. This blackout period will last until June 4.

On June 5, the transition will be complete and all .edu domain administrative functions will reside on the new, improved platform.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.
