EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, is the sole registrar for names in the .edu domain. The Department of Commerce awarded management of the domain to EDUCAUSE in October 2001. Requests for new names in the domain are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible institutions, and holders of .edu domain names must use this Web site to manage their domains and hosts. EDUCAUSE also is the exclusive provider of contact information for the .edu domain, available on the Whois server.

On September 3, 2009, EDUCAUSE announced plans to increase security of the .edu domain. See the DNSSEC FAQ for frequently asked questions.

In accordance with procedures approved by the U.S. Department of Commerce, EDUCAUSE is required to put domains that have not completed the renewal process on hold.

Steps to Requesting a New .edu Domain

It's easy to request a new name in the .edu domain. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Find out if the name you want is available.
  2. Verify that your institution is on the list of eligible institutions, or if you are a system/district office complete the application form.
  3. Agree to the EDUCAUSE Customer Service Agreement.
  4. Provide a password that you will use to manage your account.
  5. Provide Administrative Contact, Technical Contact, Billing Contact, and Domain Name Server information.
