EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, is the sole registrar for names in the .edu domain. The Department of Commerce awarded management of the domain to EDUCAUSE in October 2001. Requests for new names in the domain are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible institutions, and holders of .edu domain names must use this Web site to manage their domains and hosts. EDUCAUSE also is the exclusive provider of contact information for the .edu domain, available on the Whois server.

EDUCAUSE is working with EnCirca, a top level domain registrar with over 20 years of experience, to provide a system with increased performance availability and flexibility. New features will include enhanced privacy settings for whois data, greater account management, and additional domain protection options.

It is important as we get ready for this transition that your institution's domain whois information is accurate. During this conversion, EDUCAUSE will be communicating next steps using this contact information.

Please log into your domain and make sure contact information is updated.

Please also note that the .edu customer service agreement, which you sign in registering or renewing your .edu domain (see the .edu administration page), requires you to maintain accurate registrant information with us in order to maintain your registration.

If you need any assistance or have any questions, please contact edu@educause.edu.

In accordance with procedures approved by the U.S. Department of Commerce, EDUCAUSE is required to put domains that have not completed the renewal process or are in violation of domain policy on hold.
