EDUCAUSE Institute Management Program 2009

The EDUCAUSE Management Program focuses on developing participants' organizational management skills, particularly those related to managing one's interactions on campus and to working collaboratively with other people. It provides a foundation of skills and awareness that are essential to the successful motivation and deployment of people. The intensive program engages participants in active sessions throughout the day and into the evening.

Who Should Attend?

The Management Program is tailored to higher education IT professionals who are new to the role of manager and who would like to enhance the various practical skills important to effective management, such as interpersonal communication, time management, and performance management. The program offers an invaluable opportunity to share information and experiences with peers and seasoned IT managers from campuses across the country. This program, in particular, is of benefit to those who manage functions within central campus information resources organizations, those who are relatively new to management, those who aspire to an increasing leadership role, and those who may be relatively new to higher education.

About the Management Program

The Management Program is held twice each year. The program, led by experienced IT professionals who hold leadership roles in campus IT organizations, offers participants an exceptional opportunity to connect with peers and further develop their management skills.

The Institute's participants share many common experiences, frustrations, and challenges in their work environments. Participants will learn the techniques of effective management of these challenges, and do so in a supportive environment. During the program attendees work together to share ideas, strategies and experiences that will enable them to become more effective managers. Participants will work in teams to address issues associated with IT management and are expected to engage in all of the Institute's day and evening sessions.

This five-day intensive program offers a valuable opportunity to:

  • understand project management
  • review the terms, roles, and basic dynamics of working in teams
  • develop strategies that resolve the cultural tension between IT and higher ed culture
  • gain an overview of performance management of IT professionals
  • think about managing your career in new ways and developing your own PD plan
  • learn major factors influencing IT in higher education
  • learn how IT managers can manage change
  • understand how emotional intelligence affects professional lives
  • learn how appreciative inquiry can improve the quality of the customer experience
  • improve communication skills
  • manage time and priorities
  • learn how situational leadership can be effective

Institute faculty are also available for individual consultation on some of the common issues we all face in our jobs, including things like managing difficult personnel situations, managing up, career planning, work/life balance, budgets, assessment and more.
