EDUCAUSE Live! June 9, 2009 1:00 p.m. ET (12:00 p.m. CT, 11:00 a.m. MT, 10:00 a.m. PT) Making IT a Key Part of the Campus Sustainability EffortSpecial Guests
Dennis Cromwell leads the University Information Technology Services (UITS) Enterprise Infrastructure division, which manages the critical technology infrastructure that enables Indiana University services and software applications. Cromwell has extensive experience at IU delivering production information systems for faculty, staff, and student use. Previously, Cromwell served IU as director of university information systems for UITS. He led the infrastructure team at IU in a technology transformation from mainframe-based computing to an open systems environment that supports high-availability systems for all eight campuses. Cromwell also has significant IT industry experience with two major software firms, where he was a nationwide resource for database and application development tools. Cromwell is a frequent presenter and seminar leader at higher education IT events and has a strong record of civic engagement. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and continuing education credits from Indiana University.
Kristin Hanks is a fourth-year doctoral student in informatics, with eight years of experience working in university computing, including five years as an operations coordinator at IU’s University Information Technology Services. Her dissertation research focuses on the role of technology in helping us adopt more sustainable behaviors. Hanks served as an intern with the Sustainability Task Force, where she documented existing IT practices and created a set of recommendations to reduce the environmental impact of computing on campus. Most recently, as the sustainable computing graduate assistant at UITS, she coordinated an electronic-waste collection event and a print-reduction campaign. She is now involved in a desktop-computing energy-reduction pilot project. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Baylor University and a master’s degree in human computer interaction design from Indiana University. SummaryYour host, Steve Worona, will be joined by Dennis Cromwell and Kristin Hanks, and the topic will be "Making IT a Key Part of the Campus Sustainability Effort." Campuses across the nation are making sustainability an important institutional goal. Their efforts are often directed by staff in new positions who collaborate with a wide range of campus organizations including facilities, food services, student affairs, and other areas. The IT organization is not always involved in these initiatives, yet its activities directly impact environmental stewardship and are a strong enabler of change. This session will focus on Indiana University’s approach to making IT a key component of the sustainability effort. We will present a model for such activities, describe lessons learned, and discuss the future roles of IT in sustainability. Related EDUCAUSE Resources
