Track 6 Information Technology Architectures

Some say that the promise of new technology will not be realized until properly integrated into an "architecture" that specifies the relationship of such components as desktop workstations, databases, and networking protocols.

The right architecture--What is an appropriate IT architecture, given changing technologies, reengineered business processes, and limited resources? How should architecture link with the Strategic Plan of the organization and the strategies for implementing the IT systems? Who should be involved in the design process? What is the relationship among administrative, academic, and library architectures? How does an institution bridge from the present (already burdened by the past) to the future? How do we communicate "architecture" to non-technical partners?

The academic architecture--How should an academic architecture be formulated? How do we balance central and local computing? What about distance education?

Integration issues--Can an architecture integrate both new and legacy administrative systems? When are client/server and open systems appropriate? Do we need an MIS/EIS/DSS architecture? What is the role of the campus-wide information system?

The library--Is the library system part of the overall IT architecture? How is it defined and implemented?
