Track 5 New Technology

Today's challenges loom large, and our efforts often focus on dealing with problems we know and can see. But technology's rush may find us having solved yesterday's obsoleted problems. How do we anticipate and predict new technologies and their impacts? And how can we use emerging technologies to meet the needs of today and tomorrow?

Tracking new technology--What are you doing on your campus to prepare for new technologies? Do you use external strategic information services? Do you have formal programs with vendors, other institutions, government agencies? Do you have an internal group tracking new technology? What have their track records and your experiences been?

Using new technology--What key technologies are being adopted on your campuses? Are you actively engaged in planning, piloting, or deploying a new technology that represents a radical departure from today? (e.g. wireless and/or mobile computer networks; palm- tops and Personal Digital Assistants; new operating systems, like OS/2, Windows/NT, Chicago; new computer architectures; video and multimedia technologies; speech, voice, character recognition, emerging network access/navigation tools; etc.)
