Track 3 Information as a Strategic Resource

Traditionally, colleges and universities have used information systems to enhance basic administrative operations, with direct access generally limited to a small number of "professionals." We now have the ability to provide information support to a new generation of users, including faculty, students, librarians, non- technical staff, and even senior administrators.

Strategic maneuvers--What innovations have been tried--and what obstacles remain--in making information a strategic resource for our institutions?

Supporting administration--How do you design the appropriate decision support system for your senior administrators?

Supporting other users--How do you implement integrated, campus- wide information systems for faculty, staff, and students?

Overcoming challenges--How do you solve integrity, reliability and security problems for a campus-wide system? How do you bridge the "cultural gap" between the academic, administrative, and library computing environments?
