advancing learning through IT innovation
MARCH / APRIL 2007
Welcome to ELI NEWS, a bimonthly newsletter for ELI members and others interested in advancing learning through IT innovation.

Understand Your Learners—Use the Net Gen Discovery Tool

ELI Discovery Tools Designing effective learning environments requires an understanding of the learners you are trying to serve. Although you may try to see things from their perspective, generational differences may make that difficult. This tool is designed to help you understand learner experiences and expectations and balance those with academic requirements, faculty experience, and long-term goals. We have focused on the Net Generation because it serves as a starting point for many other discussions about active learning, emerging technologies, information fluency, learning space design, and assessment.

ELI Discovery Tools: The Net Generation is designed as an action-oriented, modifiable resource for faculty development and other instructional uses. The guide is modular; select those units that suit your needs. Each unit can be used as a stand-alone activity, lasting perhaps two hours, or all units can be combined for a multiday faculty development event.

In addition to the Net Gen tool, ELI also offers other Discovery Tools, including guides to help you plan technology use for supporting learning and a questionnaire process you can use to identify the points of convergence and divergence between faculty and student views on teaching, learning, and technology. Please note that ELI Discovery Tools are a benefit of full membership in ELI. Check our Member Organizations page to see if your institution is a member of ELI. If you're not sure whether your institution is a full ELI member, please contact EDUCAUSE Member Services at 303-449-4430 or info@educause.edu.

Open Journaling and Creative Commons: 7 Things You Should Know
The most recent 7 Things You Should Know About… briefs from ELI focus on innovations in the development and management of intellectual property. 7 Things You Should Know About Open Journaling discusses how open journaling tools enable users to publish academic journals more quickly and transparently (and less expensively) than ever before; 7 Things You Should Know About Creative Commons highlights how the Creative Commons license serves as an alternative to the traditional copyright model and increases access to and sharing of intellectual property.

Immersive Learning Environments: ELI 2007 Spring Focus Session Proceedings
Proceedings from the ELI 2007 Spring Focus Session, "Immersive Learning Environments: New Paths to Interaction and Engagement," are now available. Focus session presentations address such topics as the effectiveness of digital game-based learning; teaching in Second Life; how cyberinfrastructure enables new learning environments; and what the emergence of 3D virtual environments means for the future of learning spaces. Podcasts of general sessions and select speaker interviews will also be available.
February and March Web Seminar Archives
ELI members, if you missed the February and March Web seminars, or if you would like to refresh your memory of the sessions, take advantage of the full-audio archives of the presentations. Ellen Wagner, Adobe's senior director of worldwide eLearning solutions, conducted the February Web seminar, "Mobile Matters: Why Learning Professionals Need to Care." She discussed the current status of mobile learning, lessons learned from successful mobile learning initiatives, and 10 steps learning professionals can take to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of mobile learning.
Shirley Dugdale, director of learning environments for DEGW North America, and Phil Long, associate director of MIT's Office of Educational Innovation and Technology, presented ELI's March Web seminar, "Planning the Informal Learning Landscape." They highlighted the principles and factors institutions should consider in planning for the range of informal learning spaces and provided examples of model spaces.
(Note: ELI Web Seminar archives are available only to ELI members for one year from the event date.)
Additional Web Seminar Archives Now Publicly Available
The archive of the March 2006 Web seminar on the 2006 Horizon Report with Larry Johnson, CEO of the New Media Consortium, is now publicly available. He reviewed the report's major findings about emerging technologies likely to have a significant impact on teaching and learning over the next one to five years.
Additionally available to ELI non-members is the archive of the April 2006 Web seminar on Emory University’s Cox Hall Computing Center. In the seminar, Emory’s Alan Cattier and Kim Braxton discussed how the innovative Cox Hall serves as a model for informal learning space design.
