EDUCAUSE Reaffirms .edu Domain Fee Policy

January 2, 2002 - EDUCAUSE, the nonprofit association for information technology in higher education, which now manages the .edu Internet domain under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce, has reaffirmed that there is no fee charged to new applicants nor any renewal fee for current .edu name holders.
Some confusion was created this past December for current .edu name holders when VeriSign, the former domain registrar, inadvertently generated renewal invoices in the process of turning over control of the domain to EDUCAUSE. Along with a recent notice sent to current name holders about managing their .edu names through a new secured Web site, EDUCAUSE explained that the renewal invoices from VeriSign should be ignored.
While the terms of the cooperative agreement with the Department of Commerce grant EDUCAUSE the right to charge a nominal fee on a cost-recovery basis, the association's desire is to manage the .edu domain without doing so. Any future fees would have to be approved by the Department of Commerce.
