ECAR Symposium 2009: Disruption, Adaptation, and Evolution

December 2–4, 2009
La Costa • Carlsbad, California

The 2009 Program

The 2009 academic year in North America began with the greatest upheaval in world markets since the Great Depression. Colleges and universities throughout the world have witnessed the erosion of their endowments, rising financial aid needs, and the diminished capacity of community, state, and federal governments to underwrite our mission.

As we all respond to this massive disruption by retrenching, for some of us, the current financial crisis may present an unexpected opportunity. Amid unprecedented budget cuts, some colleges and universities will consider, propose, and make audacious changes that could not be made in more secure times. The program for this ECAR Symposium will focus on the nature of disruption and adaptation and will explore strategies for changing the cost structure of IT and positioning one's institution for renewal, evolution, and growth when the economy stabilizes.

Agenda

You can view the full conference agenda, detailed program information, or follow the links below for schedule information for specific dates.

Symposium Overview

The ECAR Symposium is a subscriber-only event. Up to two individuals from ECAR participating subscriber institutions may participate, and there is no registration fee.

The Symposium brings together world-class researchers and analysts whose study of higher education and information technology evolves either from work occurring under the aegis of ECAR or from complementary efforts. Often, ECAR endeavors to introduce participants to academics from a wide range of disciplines and to balance insights from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities with the practical wisdom of ECAR fellows and research partners. Participants in the ECAR Symposium help shape the ECAR research agenda for the next 18 months. Significant time is allocated to an open-forum assessment of research priorities and evaluation of hot topics for research and analysis, including discussion of speaker and topic priorities for the 2010 Symposium.

To assist you with travel plans, the ECAR Symposium schedule is:

  • Wednesday, December 2: Reception and dinner (5:30 p.m.)
  • Thursday, December 3: Symposium sessions (8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)
  • Friday, December 4: Symposium sessions (8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.)
