Integrated Communications Strategies

Using Internet technology to handle traditional voice traffic provides opportunities to reduce costs, integrate networks, and expand communications services. Or does it? The Net@EDU Integrated Communications Strategies working group has been exploring the economic, technical, operations, and policy issues associated with this still-emerging technology. The working group recently assembled a group of experts to assess the current state of the art, ask hard questions, and suggest strategies for higher education. This session will be a look at their findings and some of the over 50 recommendations emanating from the work to date.

The Internet Imaging System (IIS) and its component projects use digital imaging as a support mechanism for educational programming and outreach activities. IIS projects incorporate the latest digital imaging technologies and Web-to-database connectivity to provide on-demand and near-real-time visual information to faculty, staff, students, and other clientele.

Representatives from the University of Southern Mississippi will discuss each stage of a wireless network project, including planning, design, and implementation. The goal of the wireless project was to bring ubiquitous computing within an 18-month period to a campus that spans 102 buildings, at substantial cost savings over traditional wiring projects.

Linux: Hype, Hope, or Strategic Direction

This session will discuss how the University of Miami implemented voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) in a PBX world. It will discuss how VoIP complements our recently upgraded PBX to enable our university community, including its three hospitals, to perform its functions better. VoIP was deployed throughout the county and seamlessly tied back to the existing six PBXs.
