AbstractMost information security officers in higher education are very skilled technically, but few understand how to bring about organizational change, particularly given the culture and traditions of academia. The ability to exert influence—through negotiation, persuasion, advocacy, and communication (including listening)—is indispensable in achieving security goals, many of which revolve around changing the assumptions, behavior, culture, and processes of organizations and people.
