Abstract

The U.S. Department of Education has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to respond to changes in information technology, among other things. This session will provide an overview of the proposed rules, including the relationship of Social Security numbers and other personal identifiers to directory information, issues related to identification and authentication of identity, disclosure of education records and personal information to outsourced service providers, and recommendations for safeguarding education records.
