Margaret Backer Margaret Backer
Director, Web Application Development
University of California, San Diego

Margaret (Marty) Backer has been the Director of Enterprise Web Application Development in the Administrative Computing and Telecommunications department at the University of California, San Diego for the past seven years. Her role has been leading the development of enterprise Web-based administrative systems for the student, staff, and faculty communities of the campus, with the objective of pursuing methods and streamlining processes in the delivery of Web-based customer-oriented support systems, strategic projects, proof-of-concept projects, and the development of processes demonstrating new methods and technologies.

In this position, she shares the responsibilities and duties of the Director of Administrative Computing with three other directors in a team environment. Marty holds a Bachelor of Science degree and has more than 20 years of leadership experience across the information technology field—both in higher education and in the private sector.

Christopher De RosaChristopher De Rosa
Architecture Manager
University of California, San Diego

Christopher De Rosa is the Enterprise Architecture Manager for the University of California, San Diego in the Administrative Computing and Telecommunications department. Working with application development teams, he is responsible for the design and implementation of ACT’s framework/middleware and development strategy. His projects span enterprise-wide student and financial information systems, where he provides technical management to ensure consistent application architecture. His functions include providing support for portal services, application integration through Web services, and single sign-on. He serves on the UCSD single sign-on work group and is currently the technical advisor for the implementation of service-oriented architecture.

Prior to joining UCSD, he worked at the City of San Diego’s IT corporation, where he was responsible for managing and developing online applications for several municipal departments.

Summary

Your host, Steve Worona, will be joined by Margaret Backer and Christopher De Rosa, and the topic will be "Planning and Delivering Service-Oriented Architecture."

The session will address the role service-oriented architecture (SOA) plays in higher education and the reality and myths of next-generation Web services. It will include a brief description of SOA and cover topics such as the value of the architecture, prerequisites, staff training, and challenges. Real-life examples of how SOA is used at UCSD will be demonstrated and discussed.
