Nat Wood is Assistant Director for Consumer and Business Education in the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection. Nat manages the FTC's recently launched "Avoid ID Theft: Deter, Detect, Defend" campaign. Hundreds of organizations around the country are using the FTC's ID theft education kit to teach their members and partners how to minimize their risk of identity theft and respond quickly if it occurs.

Nat also manages the OnGuard Online campaign, a joint project of the federal government and the technology industry to help computer users guard against Internet fraud, secure their computers, and protect their personal information. The helpful content at OnGuardOnline.gov includes tips, articles, videos, and interactive quizzes. Nat is always on the lookout for potential partners to help inform the public about being a savvy computer user and avoiding identity theft.

In 2003, Nat oversaw the branding and marketing of the National Do Not Call Registry, which has grown to include more than 120 million phone numbers. Prior to joining the FTC, Nat worked for Vanguard Communications, where his clients included the National Recreation & Park Association, Environmental Defense, and the FTC. Nat also spent four years at the National Park Service, where he was Special Assistant to the Director and later Assistant Director for External Affairs. He is a graduate of Cornell University and the George Washington University School of Business.

There's no surefire way to protect yourself from identity theft, but there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of becoming a victim. That is the message of a nationwide education program recently launched by the Federal Trade Commission: "AvoID Theft: Deter, Detect, Defend."

  • Deter: Take steps to reduce your risk of ID theft
  • Detect: Monitor your personal information
  • Defend: Act quickly when you suspect identity theft

Nat Wood will discuss these steps and how you can make presentations to your community about identity theft using the FTC's ID Theft Consumer Education Kit. The kit includes a how-to guide for talking about identity theft, an easily reproduced pamphlet, a PowerPoint presentation, and a 10-minute video with tips from the FTC.
