A Federated Model of Computing Support at a Large State University

Four years ago, faculty and administrative users were clamoring for improvements in the levels of assistance they were receiving from the University of North Texas. The university responded by increasing staffing and by creating a federated structure for coordinating the efforts of distributed computing support units. This talk will discuss the model that resulted and will provide specifics on funding, support ratios, and how the model has successfully brought together college and departmental support units.

LDAP at the University of North Texas: Implementation and Uses

Providing online services to a large organization can lead to challenges for client identification and authorization if organizational data is not readily available in a networked environment. This session will describe the tools and techniques used to develop and populate a Netscape LDAP server and to deploy that server in support of a number of services, including enterprise electronic user name support, restricted access to online library resources, development of an automated student bulk e-mailing system, and data management for online course provision via WebCT.

Outsourcing IT Infrastructure at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

UTMB began the transition to an outsource service provider in July 1999. Services include desktop support, workstation refresh, wide area data networks, remote access, service desk, and Internet service. Forty-three employees transitioned to the provider at transition. More than a year later this project has proved to be both cost effective and provide quality service to over 4,600 desktops.
