The Challenges of Cyber Security in Academia

Monday, June 07, 2004
12:45 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. GS01

Phyllis A. Schneck, Vice President, Strategic Development, CipherTrust, Inc.

Higher education remains dedicated to the open exchange of information. Yet, the threats to information security require protection, and sometimes closing, of the very networks that enable open collaboration. While many institutions have invested in network security, they have not traditionally focused on application-level security, especially e-mail security. The spam and virus outbreaks to date have merely been expensive and time-consuming nuisances; however, one of the most effective ways for an intruder to inject unauthorized code into a critical system is via e-mail. What would happen if unauthorized code, possibly originating from an insecure campus network, affected a critical physical infrastructure such as water, power, or transportation? Dr. Schneck will explore cyber security within the academic environment as well as the need for vigilance with e-mail security, striking a balance between open collaboration and safe communication.

Trading Music and Movies on Campus: What Does the Future Hold?

4:45 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. GS03

Marcel C. Garaud, Vice President, New Technology, Sony Music Digital Services, Sony Music Entertainment

Barry Robinson, Senior Counsel for Corporate Affairs, Recording Industry Association of America

Members of the Joint Committee of the Higher Education and Entertainment Communities have been tracking the legal, policy, and technical issues of distribution of online content on campuses. Colleges and universities, as well as the entertainment industry, are struggling to adapt to rapidly changing technological and social environments as they look for viable and legal alternatives to current file-sharing practices. After a brief overview of the committee’s work, two leaders from the recording and motion picture industries will present proposed solutions and will discuss the issues and implications with the audience.
