General SessionsLeadership and TechnologyWednesday, June 19, 2002 Carole A. Barone, Vice President, EDUCAUSE, retired The infrastructure to support the transformation of higher education is largely in place. However, institutional culture, policy, practice, and support methodologies generally lag. Knowing how to gauge the institution's readiness for change in relation to the opportunities enabled by technology is the challenge faced by today's leaders. Understanding how one's own perspective intersects with that of the campus helps to guide technological choices. Moving Beyond The Rhetoric: IT Leadership in the 21st CenturyTuesday, June 18, 2002 Leo I. Higdon, Jr., President, Connecticut College Both academic and IT professionals understand the importance of technology -- it is no longer a sideline pursuit or merely a department on campus. Instead, technology pervades every facet of our lives and our institutions. As a result, IT is now a priority, and it is assumed that IT leadership will be a part of the senior management team. In an institutional environment, with all of its issues -- governmental, academic, and competitive -- IT leadership is crucial. Instead of fine-tuning our mission statements, it's time to answer the critical question, exactly how can the IT leader of the 21st century be successful? The speaker will discuss, from a college president's point of view, the steps necessary to successfully execute an IT strategic plan. |
