Bryan Alexander
Director of Research
National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE)

Bryan Alexander serves as director of research for the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE). In that role, he researches and develops programs on the advanced uses of information technology in liberal arts contexts. His primary research interests concern mobile and wireless computing, digital gaming, and social software. Other interests include digital writing, copyright and intellectual property, information literacy, project management, information design, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Alexander maintains and contributes to a series of blogs, including Liberal Education Today and Smartmobs.

Committed to exploring computer-mediated pedagogy, he researches and writes on the critical uses of computers and teaching in terms of the interdisciplinary liberal arts and the contemporary development of cyberculture. Alexander holds a doctorate from the University of Michigan and has taught English and information technology studies as faculty at Centenary College of Louisiana.

Julie Little, Associate Director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), will moderate this Web seminar with Bryan Alexander in which he discusses transformative technologies for teaching and learning.

Web 2.0 projects have rapidly expanded into a world of social media. From blogs to podcasts, millions of people have published and shared a growing amount of digital content. At the same time virtual worlds have grown in popularity, from massively multiplayer games like World of Warcraft to metaverse projects like Second Life. How do these two movements apply to higher education? Where do Web 2.0 and the metaverse connect? What trends are emerging for the near future?
