New Strategies for Learningware Development: The NLII Perspective

Bob Carlton, Dir of Strategic Alliances--Intl Thomson Publishing Ed Group; Carol Twigg, VP--Educom; Jack Wilson, Acting Dean of the Faculty--Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Educom's National Learning Infrastructure Initiative (NLII) has spent the last year engaging its institutional and corporate members in discussions about how best to create a robust commercial market for high-quality, college-level learningware. We began by observing that the efforts of colleges and universities to develop instructional software have not resulted in a sustainable, scaleable body of learning materials. We believe that partnerships between the publishing community and higher education offer greater possibilities of success. But while many institutions and companies are generally in favor of the idea, few of these partnerships have come to fruition. This panel presents the results of two NLII invitational symposia that have been held on this topic and outlines our sense of the necessary ingredients for successful collaboration.
