The University as Ivory Tower and as Public Good
Sponsored by SCT, An EDUCAUSE Platinum Partner

Wednesday, October 02, 2002
8:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. GS01

Nancy E. Cantor, Chancellor and President, Syracuse University

Increasingly, universities are poised, literally and metaphorically, between worlds--constituted as places apart (ivory towers) in which we think and "play" with problems of great intrinsic interest, yet strive to be responsible and responsive to a world beyond (public goods). Technology is interwoven throughout our community. At its best, it can connect these worlds. Nevertheless, there are genuine boundaries to cross, and technology must be used mindfully to encourage integration rather than isolation. Universities can model new forms of collaborative work that prepare students to change society.
