  • Andrew J. Korty, Deputy Information Security Officer, Indiana University

Abstract

How many times has this happened to you? A student comes up to you and asks,"How is my digital identity assured and can I use my campus userid and password to seamlessly review my federal loans?"

Do you know how to answer? Are you unsure about what a digital identity is all about? Interested in learning about the major concepts and terms of identity management, why it's important, and how the data flows from source systems to applications? If you are new to this topic or would like an overall map of where the pieces fit at an institutional level, consider registering for this non-technical preworkshop seminar.

This session will include overviews of the:

  • What is digital identity?
  • What is the identity life cycle?
  • What are the primary reasons for implementing identity-related services?
  • What is federated identity and why is it important to student services?

If you are new to this topic or would like an overall map of where the pieces fit at an institutional level, consider registering for this preworkshop seminar. Topics relating to the support of authentication across boundaries may be discussed briefly at the seminar and again in more detail at the CAMP.

Palm A/D

Speaker(s)

  • John J. Suess, Vice President of Information Technology/CIO, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Abstract

Effective security efforts are composed of a complex set of interrelated components including policies, procedures, and technical controls. The interrelation between components is not obvious, and the technical details of security systems can obscure perspective with respect to other critical systems. Security architectures provide a coherent plan to ensure that we meet our IT security goals. But you can’t build your security model without an accompanying IAM model as a part of it. This session will discuss models for security and IAM and how they interleave.

Minimize Exposure Panel: Correlating Identities Across the Enterprise

Session Details

Wednesday, February 13, 2008
2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
Palm A/D

Speaker(s)

  • Thomas J. Barton, Senior Director for Integration, University of Chicago
  • Mark I. Berman, Chief Information Officer, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
  • Michael Conlon, Director of Data Infrastructure, University of Florida
  • Jens Haeusser, Director, Strategy, The University of British Columbia

Abstract

What are the benefits and issues with correlating identities across the enterprise? What are the issues relating to cross walking and characteristics of identifiers? What strategies are there for getting the most out of logging? It’s important to know if an identifier has been reassigned, for instance, when using it for access to restricted spaces. Are there new institutional processes we should consider, such as logging in to register your IP address and binding an IP with a user? This session will explore these questions and offer a set of common requirements.
